And I made it the same way I make my rice kheer which is very easy to make. Samvat Rice Kheer: Sama Ke Chawal Ki Kheer is like any other Indian kheer in taste and texture except it is made with millet and not regular white rice. It has milk, sugar, green cardamom, and millet (samvat rice). It is a tasty and humble dessert for a falahar (no whole grains) diet as many communities refrain from eating rice while fasting.

Steps to make Vrat ki Kheer & Poori:
  1. For Poori - Boil the potato, drain, peel and mash.
  2. Add the Water chestnut flour to it and salt and mix well. Don’t add salt while boiling potato. Add little water if needed
  3. Make four balls and on your palm flatten the poori’s. There will be cracks but try to cover them. Make the Poori’s thick
  4. For Kheer - in a pan roast the Sama Chawal. Add ghee and roast further till the rice is coated well with ghee.
  5. Peel the sweet potato and cut into small pieces. Add the chopped sweet potato to the Sama chawal and roast well.
  6. Add milk and keep stirring. Keep some milk handy. Once the Kheer thickens add some more milk.
  7. Add sugar and stir one more time. Add elaichi powder. Stir.
  8. In a pan heat ghee and fry almonds. Garnish the almonds to the Kheer and set aside
  9. Plate Poori’s and Kheer and enjoy

Sama rice kheer is usually prepared during fasting days, especially in Navratri. Mixing milk, sama rice, and sugar, cooking on medium heat and flavored with either cardamom or saffron, this sama rice kheer is tasty and very healthy. You can easily replace Barnyard millet or sama rice with normal rice or semolina. During Navratri Vrat Ke Chawal is also a popular ingredient used in many dishes.
