The ingredients needed to make Mulled wine:
  1. Make ready 1 bottle dry red wine
  2. Make ready 1 orange
  3. Get 8 whole cloves
  4. Get 2 cinamon sticks
  5. Get 2 star anise
  6. Get 2-4 tablespoons sugar, honey or maple syrup

HOW LONG WILL MULLED WINE KEEP? Use a decent-quality wine, something soft, fruity and not oaky. I've put a few suggestions in below, but you really can't go wrong with a simple tempranillo or garnacha from Spain. Place the sugar and all of the spices (except the nutmeg) into a large, heavy-bottomed pan.

Steps to make Mulled wine:
  1. Combine ingredients: Pour whole bottle of wine in a saucepan, peel orange, twist peel and put it in, cut orange into slices and add them too, add cloves, star anise, sugar and cinnamon or if you can't find cinnamon sticks use 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
  2. Simmer: Heat until the wine just barely  reaches a simmer over medium-high heat.  (Avoid letting it bubble — you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.)  Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
  3. Strain: Using a fine mesh strainer, remove orange and spices
  4. Serve: Serve warm in heatproof mugs and garnish with slice of lemon, lime or orange

Add the bay leaves and use a speed peeler to pare the zest of the lemon and oranges. Add to the pan, slice the oranges in half and squeeze in the juice. Pour in just enough of the wine to cover all the ingredients. In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine the red wine, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil.
