Kunu Aya is a traditional creamy milk like beverage with a spicy nutty taste….you'd definitely get hooked once you try it. In spain, tigernut drink is also known as "horchata de chufa". To make kunu aya, you can use either the fresh tigernuts, dry tigernuts or a combination of the two.

To get started with this particular recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can have kunun aya using 7 ingredients and 3 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

The ingredients needed to make Kunun aya:
  1. Make ready 3 cups aya (tigernuts)
  2. Take 1 whole coconut
  3. Make ready 1 cup deseeded dates
  4. Get to taste Sugar
  5. Take 1 sachet peak milk
  6. Make ready cubes Ice
  7. Make ready 4 pieces cloves

Tigernuts which is what the Kunun Aya drink is made from is known as "Aya" in hausa, "Aki hausa" (meaning Hausa groundnut) in igbo and "Ofio" in yoruba. There are two types usually sold and these are the dry tigernuts and the fresh tigernuts. In Spain, Tigernut drink is also known as "Horchata de chufa". When you want to make kunun aya, it's preferable to buy the big dry ones and soak in water for three days.

Instructions to make Kunun aya:
  1. Wash and soak the tigernuts until soft enough. Blend the tigernuts, coconut, cloves, dates with some water use enough water to blend it smooth but be careful not to dilute the flavours.
  2. Sieve the blended mixture and stir in milk, add enough sugar to taste if needed (because the dates are very sweet too)
  3. Serve in a cup filled with ice cubes and enjoy,

You will have to be changing the water every day to make sure the nuts do not get sour. To grind, it's best to use your personal blender compared to using a commercial grinding machine. Because it might cause the taste to change cause of previous grinding. An irresistible level of sweet, spicy, flavoursome and goodness, even somewhat sensual if you ask me. (ok enough already). Kunun Aya,also known as Ofio Milk, is a nutritious and refreshing drink, made with Tiger nuts.
